Dental anxiety is real, and it keeps millions of people from getting care they need. If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your heart rate spike, you’re not alone, and you’re not being dramatic. At Bite Club in Bucktown, we offer sedation options that help anxious patients get through procedures comfortably, from routine cleanings to more involved treatments.
Dr. Nga Huynh has built this practice around the idea that dental care shouldn’t be something you dread. Sedation dentistry is one more tool we use to make that a reality.
Not all sedation is the same, and the right option depends on your level of anxiety, the procedure being performed, and your medical history.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas). This is the mildest form of sedation and the most commonly used. You breathe it in through a small mask placed over your nose, and it produces a calm, relaxed feeling within minutes. You stay fully conscious and can respond to Dr. Huynh throughout the procedure. The effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities the same day.
Oral sedation. For patients with moderate anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures, we may prescribe an oral sedative taken before your appointment. This produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide. You’ll be awake but drowsy, and many patients have little memory of the procedure afterward. You’ll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.
Dr. Huynh will recommend the best sedation approach during your consultation based on your comfort level and the treatment plan. The goal is always the same: get you the care you need without the stress.
Sedation isn’t just for people with severe phobias. It’s useful in a range of situations.
Patients who have avoided the dentist for years due to anxiety often find that sedation makes their return visit manageable. Once the first appointment is behind them, many discover their anxiety decreases naturally with each subsequent visit.
Patients with a strong gag reflex that makes dental work uncomfortable benefit from sedation because it relaxes the reflex and allows Dr. Huynh to work more efficiently. Patients who need multiple procedures done in a single visit can combine treatments under sedation and reduce the total number of appointments.
Patients with TMJ issues or jaw pain that makes holding their mouth open for extended periods uncomfortable also find sedation helpful. And parents who are anxious about their own dental care (even if their kids do fine) deserve to feel comfortable too.
Sedation is just one part of how Bite Club approaches patient comfort. The office was designed to feel calm and welcoming, not clinical. Dr. Huynh explains every step before she does it. The team checks in with you throughout your appointment. And if you need a break, you take a break.
For patients whose anxiety is specifically about pain, it’s worth knowing that modern dentistry is far less uncomfortable than what most people remember from childhood. Local anesthesia alone keeps procedures painless. Sedation adds a layer of emotional comfort on top of that.
If dental anxiety has kept you from getting care, whether that’s a routine cleaning, a filling, or something bigger, we can help you find a way through it.

Yes. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation have been used safely in dentistry for decades. Dr. Huynh reviews your medical history and current medications before recommending any sedation to make sure it's appropriate for you.
No. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation keep you conscious. With nitrous, you're fully aware and responsive. With oral sedation, you're drowsy and deeply relaxed but still able to respond to instructions. General anesthesia (being fully unconscious) is not offered at our office.
If you receive nitrous oxide only, yes. The effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed. If you receive oral sedation, you'll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
Coverage varies by plan. Some PPO plans cover sedation when it's medically necessary (for example, for patients with documented anxiety disorders or special needs). We'll check your coverage before your appointment and let you know what to expect.
Yes. If anxiety prevents you from coming in for routine care, sedation for a cleaning is absolutely an option. The goal is to get you in the chair and keep your oral health on track, whatever it takes to make that happen.
